A magnetar is tiny for a star, about the size of a city—but it can create magnetic fields up to 10 trillion times more intense than that magnet on your refrigerator. Our NICER telescope, part of the International Space Station, recently spotted a unique event: the merging of three multimillion-degree X-ray spots on a magnetar some 13,000 light-years from Earth.
