This Eastern Screech Owl (a red or "rufous" morph) presented to the clinic in December of 2016 with head trauma and broken talons. After a month of treatments from our volunteers, the owl was well enough to be sent to a licensed rehabilitation facility for the talons to grow out. As a raptor, these fierce predators rely heavily on strong, hooked claws to capture and kill prey. This Eastern Screech Owl (23-4998) was discovered in Fort Lauderdale unable to fly. With a confirmed left wing fracture, the wing was placed in a wrap to allow for proper alignment while healing.
