The 29th Academy Awards was the first time a competitive category was included for foreign language films. The nominees were from West Germany (‘The Captain of Kopenick’), France (‘Gervaise’), Japan (‘Harp of Burma’), Denmark (‘Qivitoq) with Italy (‘La Strada’) taking home the first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
