Removing surface grime and old discolored varnish makes up a large part of any conservator’s daily work. That said, even after the 10,000th painting it’s always exciting to see what lies beneath. That satin fabric just sparkles! Notice however some old retouching in the lower part of the dress that was totally hidden by the varnish and grime. That’s oil paint that will likely have to be removed manually. At pine point t it probably matched but over time it darkened and now looks pretty lousy. |

Retouching. The best and worst part of conservation. When everything is going well it’s an amazing feeling and time stands still. When it’s not going well, it’s miserable and never seems to end. This painting had two large tears in pretty important places and after addressing the structural issues the retouching focused on reintegrating the image.
