Marine Veliger Larva with Ciliated Velum
This video portrays a sample of sea water from my 120gallon marine system. It is a 6 year old tank with a lot of biodiversity. I regularly check the marine fauna to make sure I can correctly diagnose issues and treat the problem directly. This larva surprise is one of many I have during microscopy. Enjoy!

Meet the veliger larva - a tiny ocean drifter with a delicate shell and two ciliated “velums” that look like fluttering ears. These velums help it swim through plankton and capture food. As it prepares for life on the seafloor, it undergoes a dramatic transformation: it loses its velum and twists its body in a process called torsion, becoming a juvenile snail. 🎥 Video by @elizabethbeston Elizabeth Beston #MicroscopyMonday #MarineBiology

Igor Adameyko on Instagram: "This is a planktonic larva of a marine snail called veliger. Snails that live in the sea spend long time being a part of zooplankton before they settle and start a “traditional” crawling life."

Igor Adameyko on Instagram: "This is a well-developed (2 mm) veliger from The Lombok Strait, Indonesia. The four lengthy lobes of its velum are glittering with beating cilia. ✨🌊 Soon, it will settle down to the ocean floor and turn into a proper snail. As you of course know, snails do not move fast or cover large distances, and, therefore, to propagate across wide ocean spaces they need a swimming planktonic larva - a veliger. Those can stay afloat for weeks, harnessing the ocean current

Igor Adameyko on Instagram: "This is a veliger, a highly motile gastropod snail larva (0.7 mm) from the North Sea. Snails do not move fast and do not cover vast distances. However, everything is different with their larvae equipped with ciliated foldable sails (velum). Veligers stay as a plankton for quite a while, being carried by the ocean currents, covering dosens or even hundreds of kilometers during their growth phase. This guarantees that if snails were wiped out from one part of the sea,
