The combination of an old discolored natural damar varnish and years and years of tar, nicotine, and other contaminants have a obscured the original colors to the point of making this painting almost unrecognizable. This is the first of four posts where I varnish paintings. You’ll notice that these aren’t necessarily the most radical transformation’s but what I want you to take note of is the subtle changes in the intensity and saturation of the colors and how that affects the painting overall.
