Spring peepers are small chorus frogs (Pseudacris crucifer) known for their distinctive high-pitched “peep” calls, which are one of the first signs of spring in many parts of eastern North America, including Michigan. What They Are: • Size: Tiny—only about 1 inch long. • Color: Typically tan or brown with a dark “X” marking on their backs. • Habitat: Found in wooded areas and near wetlands, especially in temporary pools and marshes during breeding season. • Sound: Their calls sound like high-pit
