Targeting the rumen microbiota for reduced methane production, with Prof. Alex Hristov PhD
This episode features Prof. Alex Hristov PhD from Penn State University (USA) talking about the microbiota of ruminants and how it can be targeted for reduced methane production. The rumen (pre-stomach area) of cows and other animals contains microorganisms that digest the feed before it enters the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. Hydrogen ...

Methane Emissions

Not just cows 🐄 Methane has a much bigger story to tell. From fossil fuel leaks and landfills to livestock and wetlands, methane is released all over the world and it packs a serious climate punch. It’s the second-largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide, and molecule for molecule, it traps around 30 times more heat over a century. The good news? Methane doesn’t linger for long. With an atmospheric lifetime of about 10 years, cutting methane emissions can lead to faster climat

Methane can build up in a cow's guts due to bacteria, which is responsible for turning grass into useful energy. 🐄 🌱 It's necessary to release the gas before further accumulation. You can stick a needle-like trocar into the cow's rumen to release the methane. But I'm not sure why it was necessary to light the methane gas 🤔 Was it to show that there is methane? Or to light it before it gets released into the surroundings? If you're a vet or have any idea, please shed some light ✨️ #physics #sc
