Today we celebrate Sparky the fire dog’s 72nd birthday! Sparky was deemed the official mascot of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 1951 and has served as national icon in the fire service ever since. Dogs make everything better! That’s why we’re grateful to Dogs On Call for paying visits to all of our fire stations, Fire Admin, and CARES. Dogs on Call is a Wisconsin-based 501(c)(3) therapy animal organization that connects comforting canines with first responders. The many mental and physical benefits of therapy dog programs like this include helping people relax and decompress, providing comfort, and allowing firefighters to process their emotions in a healthy way. Put your paws together for the Bureau of Fire Investigation K-9 Unit! 🐾 Our dogs are trained to sniff out ignitable liquids and help rescue victims from large-scale disasters. Most recently, the Unit was tapped to make sure there were no people trapped under the rubble of that partial building collapse in the Bronx. All dogs in the unit are named after fallen members.
