All signs seem to be pointing to the Islanders making Matthew Schaefer the first defenseman to go No. 1 overall since the Sabres took Owen Power in 2021.

The New York Islanders have the No. 1 pick after winning the draft lottery in May. The San Jose Sharks, who finished last in the overall standings, pick second followed by Chicago and Utah. Six of the top prospects: Hometown: Hamilton, Ontario.
