UNESCO announces Nicaragua's withdrawal from UN cultural body in protest over press freedom award.

Nicaragua angrily announced its withdrawal from the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in a letter that UNESCO's director general, Audrey Azoulay, said she received Sunday morning.

"La Prensa has made courageous efforts to report the truth to the people of Nicaragua," said Yasuomi Sawa, the chair of the jury for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2025.
