All Texas sheriffs would be required to cooperate with federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws under legislation advanced by the House on Saturday, which prompted a raucous protest at the Capitol just hours before the debate.

Senate Bill 8 would require sheriffs in large Texas counties to request 287(g) agreements with ICE, where local officers help federal agents enforce immigration law.

A bill requiring Texas sheriffs to help with federal immigration enforcement would cost Harris County "well over $1 million," and duplicate an initiative the agency already has in place, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
