California is about to put new restrictions on its legal aid fund often used by undocumented immigrants. Advocates are saying with all of the recent federal immigration actions, the timing couldn’t be worse.

If she opens her mouth too wide, she worries, people will see her chipped, plaque-covered front teeth. An immigrant without legal status, Maria doesn’t have health or dental insurance. When her teeth start to throb, she swallows pain pills. Last summer, a dentist said it would cost $2,400 to fix her teeth. That’s more than she can afford.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a warning to landlords that housing discrimination against immigrant tenants is illegal and will not be tolerated, and that they must provide tenants with written leases in a language the tenant can understand.

Pietruszka said he only hires builders here in the country legally, but that he also relies on companies that employ highly skilled, undocumented labor. Many of those workers are now no-shows because they are fearful of the ramped-up Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids.

Through donations and services, the Family Assistance Program will support L.A.-area churches serving immigrant communities in need.
