The meeting will address a proposal for corrections officers to transport ICE detainees from the Orange County Jail to immigration facilities, including “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades. Elected officials and immigration rights advocates are planning to speak about Orange County’s involvement with ICE.
Without permanent structures, electricity or running water, logistical headaches have emerged at “Alligator Alcatraz.”
Former top immigration officials from the Biden administration warned Tuesday that billions for immigration enforcement signed into law earlier this month will escalate the rapid detention and deportations of immigrants.
ICE received additional funding from President Trump's "big, beautiful bill," and Alligator Alcatraz began operating.
If adopted by the county commission Tuesday, an amended agreement with the federal government would authorize county correctional officers to transport immigration detainees at the request of ICE.
