Beware of those taking to social media to deliberately spread misinformation, hate, fear and division,” the Frisco, Texas, police chief said.
As police investigate the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf, families face grief, threats, and a wave of misinformation spreading across social media.
Officials in Frisco are warning the community against misinformation on social media surrounding the death of Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student at Frisco Memorial High School who was fatally stabbed by Karmelo Anthony,
The statement was released by a family friend on behalf of Meagan Metcalf and her son Hunter Metcalf, Austin Metcalf's twin brother.
The GiveSendGo campaign was purportedly set up by the family of Karmelo Anthony, 17, who cops say confessed to the horrific stabbing at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, last Wednesday.
One of the posts came from an account claiming to belong to Frisco Police Chief David Shilson and stated that the victim, Austin Metcalf, initiated the confrontation that led to his death, according to a copy of the post.
Police have not said what led to the stabbing, but Austin Metcalf's father said it started when his sons and members of the Memorial High track team questioned Anthony about why he was standing near them instead of his own school's team.
The attorney for Karmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old accused of murdering football star Austin Metcalf at a Texas track meet, insists he doesn’t have “any reason” to think the killing “wasn’t in self defense” — and will request the teen’s bond be lowered from $1,000,000.
