New Jersey's Democratic Governor Phil Murphy said he was "outraged" by Baraka's arrest and demanded his immediate release.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a Republican serving a South Jersey district, condemned Baraka and the other elected officials in a statement, calling it a “direct attack on the rule of law.” Van Drew is one of only two Republicans in New Jersey’s congressional delegation.

Baraka, the mayor of New Jersey’s largest city, was arrested and charged with trespassing during a protest against the controversial federal immigration detention center in Newark.
