The fragile-looking structures are the remnants of Little Liberia, a 200-year-old, 15-block community founded by free African Americans and Natives that at one time boasted a luxurious seaside resort hotel for monied Black visitors, the city's first free lending library, a school for colored children and various businesses and churches.
