New research suggests that Earth’s solid inner core might not be as rigid as once believed. Instead, it could exist in an unusual “buttery” state of matter, one that challenges long-standing ...

Some 5,000 kilometers beneath the ground sits a solid sphere of metal roughly the size of the Moon, glowing at a temperature that rivals and by many estimates exceeds the surface of the Sun. This is ...

New research reveals that Earth’s solid inner core is actually in a superionic state, where carbon atoms flow freely through a solid iron lattice. This unusual behavior makes the core soft, matching ...

Earth's core: solid or liquid? Yes — we know more about distant galaxies than our own interior. Is Earth's core solid or liquid? Yes. Our planet's interior has been harder to study than the cosmos. We ...

Earth's inner core, composed primarily of iron with a small percentage of light elements, may enter a superionic state at extreme pressure and temperature, according to experimental results from ...

An international research team may have found an explanation for seismic anomalies, the noticeable deviations in the behavior of earthquake waves, in Earth's inner core. A team led by scientists from ...

Earth's inner core, the solid iron-rich mass at the center of our planet, is slowly growing as the surrounding molten outer core cools and freezes. But this process has been a source of debate amongst ...

What the research is about Earth's inner core is thought to consist mainly of iron, yet many questions remain about its ...

The Earth's inner core seems to be solid. But what shape is it?”I started investigating from that simple question. Is it a ...

A day feels reliably fixed at 24 hours, but sufficiently precise clocks reveal that Earth does not rotate at exactly the same rate from decade to decade. The difference is tiny, usually measured in ...

Iron hydride was compressed in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell and analyzed using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, revealing evidence of a superionic state. Earth's inner core, composed primarily of ...
