Amazon.com Inc. is spending at a rapid rate to expand data center capacity to meet the intense demand for artificial intelligence computing power, fueling the fastest quarterly sales growth for its cloud unit in more than three years.

Amazon is reporting increased profits and net sales during its fiscal first quarter, helped by surging growth in its prominent cloud computing unit.

The e-commerce giant is making more money than expected from AWS but it's also spending a lot, and will continue to do so in the near term, its chief executive said.
