Díaz, who turns 32 in March, wants the same kind of deal he signed with the Mets in November 2022, according to a person briefed on his wishes – five years, $102 million. He opted out of the final two years and $38 million in the deal, and is certain to turn down the Mets’ one-year, $22.025 million qualifying offer.
Now the Mets are reportedly circling one of the top available starters: 2023 All-Star right-hander Zac Gallen. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, New York plans to be an active suitor for Gallen once he declines a one-year qualifying offer from the Arizona Diamondbacks and hits free agency.
The Mets added two infielders to the organization on Friday, possibly in preparation for a potential McNeil trade. “We have signed INF Jose Rojas and INF Jackson Cluff to minor league contracts with invitations to major league spring training,” the team announced in a post on X.
The Mets lack a clear ace. Starting pitchers for the Mets gave up a 4.13 ERA last season, ranked 18th in Major League Baseball. There are solid options available in free agency, and CBS Sports' Dayn Perry predicted the Mets would land Framber Valdez.
However, there may be one much more cost-effective replacement available to them this offseason.
