Astronauts Sunita Williams, who grew up in Needham, and Butch Wilmore have been living on the space station since June after the Boeing Starliner capsule they arrived on experienced issues while docking.

The team, which includes NASA's Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan's Takuya Onishi, and Russia's Kirill Peskov, took off from Kennedy Space Center in a SpaceX capsule early this morning. They will arrive at the ISS tomorrow. This mission will pave the way for astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams's return after a nine-month stay in space.

NASA and SpaceX on Saturday, 15 March, launched a crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS) to bring home NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore who have been stranded in space since June 2024.

Four astronauts boarded SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket to replace Williams and Wilmore at the ISS.. These four astronauts are - NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA ) astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore will remain on the ISS until at least March 19 due to delays caused by technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner.
