Authorities in North Carolina say an escaped inmate fatally shot a detention officer with his own gun, then fled in a stolen vehicle before being captured in another county.

Detectives are investigating after a shooting took place in Waynesville, North Carolina. Just before 2 p.m. on Monday, the Waynesville Police Department said officers were investigating a shooting that occurred in the Allens Creek Road area. According to police, no one was injured and there is no threat to the public.

A detention officer was fatally shot with his own gun on June 30 as a federal inmate escaped from custody at a medical clinic in western North Carolina, a sheriff said. The inmate had been taken to an orthopedics office in Murphy for undisclosed treatment when a scuffle began.
