Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised on Monday to cut net migration to Britain significantly over the next four years, saying the country risked becoming "an island of strangers" without tougher rules on immigration.

The Government's White Paper will not include a target number for net migration, the Home Secretary has said. Yvette Cooper refused several times to put a number because her department is “not going to take” the same approach as previous governments. She has indicated that there will be “some changes” to rules around students and immigration.
