During Mr. Trump's first term, his labor secretary, Alexander Acosta, resigned following criticism of his handling of Epstein's 2008 plea deal when he was a federal prosecutor in Florida. Epstein served 13 months in a jail work-release program after he was originally accused of sexually abusing dozens of girls and young women.

Social media users mocked Mullin for suggesting he is trying to give “cover” to Trump over the Epstein files. This comes just one day after the Wall Street Journal reported that Attorney General Pam Bondi informed Trump in May that he was included in the Epstein files.

The House oversight subcommittee voted Wednesday night to subpoena the Justice Department for the Epstein files, with three Republicans joining Democrats in support.

Trump’s association with Epstein is well-established and his name was included in records that his own Justice Department released in February.

"I have asked the Justice Department to release all grand jury testimony with respect to Epstein," Trump said.
