While California saw devastating wildfires in Los Angeles at the start of the year, the state has experienced an average summer fire season, with only one blaze, the Gifford fire, surpassing 100,000 acres. Fire activity is expected to pick up in coming days as the state bakes in a heat wave.

The Pickett Fire in California's Napa County grew Friday afternoon near Calistoga, reaching more than 3,000 acres and becoming the largest fire in the Bay Area this fire season.

The wildfire spread to more than 2,100 acres hours after erupting near Calistoga, authorities said. Evacuation orders were issued in parts of Napa County.
