The outbreak has expanded beyond West Texas and the Panhandle with confirmed cases in Erath County, southwest of Fort Worth, and Brown County, between Abilene and Killeen. Lamar County in far northeast Texas has 10 cases. Officials say 42 people have been hospitalized.

Measles cases exploded in the southwest this week, with more than 483 cases confirmed in 21 states, the CDC said Friday. That’s a 360% surge from the week prior, when just 105 patients were reported with measles — sparking widespread concerns that the outbreak of the once-rare virus will continue to spread across the US.

The United States is facing its largest measles outbreak in years. As of March 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 483 measles cases across 20 U.S. jurisdictions, with Texas reporting the most severe surge.

A measles outbreak in West Texas is continuing to grow in cases as state health officials work to contain the spread of the highly-contagious disease.

The state has reported 422 cases since January. On Tuesday, the first cases were reported in Brown and Erath counties. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 22 new measles cases in connection with a West Texas measles outbreak Tuesday.
